Dress in 17th-century Netherlands was unlike that of the rest of Europe. Although the Dutch were no longer under Spanish rule, they continued to dress in black, considered a modest and somber color. The Dutch would also extend the usage of the ruff–an element of costume which was falling out of fashion in the rest of Europe. For Valentino’s FW 2013 show, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli were inspired by the art of the Old Flemish Masters, looking at portraits and painted tiles. The result was little demure dresses in black with white collars and cuffs, as well as blue and white prints resembling Delft ceramics.
