Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s tumultuous romance developed when the couple met on set of the film Cleopatra in 1962. The suspicions and eventual discovery of the love affair was documented by the Italian paparazzi and splashed across the pages of tabloids around the globe, consuming popular culture. In response to the widespread coverage of the romance, Richard Avedon boldly shot a satirical fashion editorial in the September, 1962 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, mocking the famous couple. Avedon cast model Suzy Parker and director Mike Nichols dressed in the latest fashions to portray Liz and Dick in the editorial “Suzy Parker and Mike Nichols Rock Europe” which looked more like pages out of a tabloid than a high fashion magazine.
