Gustav Klimt and Steven Meisel

Viennese Secessionist artist Gustav Klimt’s allover-patterned paintings are often reinterpreted by designers, artists and photographers. Klimt’s 1916 painting The Dancer features his signature kaleidoscopic background, with elements of Japonisme that seem to flow from the dancer’s flower-patterned robe. Although not considered a fashion painter, Klimt’s sartorial focus may have resulted from his close relationship with avant-garde fashion designer Emilie Flöge. In 2007, Steven Meisel looked to Klimt in photographing the editorial ”Vogue Patterns” for Vogue Italia’s December 2007 issue which featured models Lara Stone, Meghan Collison, Kinga Rajzak, Maryna Linchuk, and Hanne-Gaby Odiele dressed, covered in and set against swirling prints and patterns.
