Belgian artist René Magritte toyed with perspective and reality, creating surreal works through real, ordinary settings and mundane objects. The apple had a lingering presence within Magritte’s oeuvre, as did the suit-clad man topped with a bowler hat. In his 1964 work The Son of Man, the painter depicted a commonplace scenario of a suited man, however, placed an apple, somewhat unnervingly, directly in front of the unknown’s visage, obstructing his face. For Vogue Italia’s December 2006 issue, photographer Tim Walker playfully restaged a Magritte-like image, opting for a flower rather than Magritte’s ubiquitous green apple to mask the face of model Guinevere van Seenus.
