Candace Wheeler and Alexander McQueenAmerican textile and interior designer Candace Wheeler is well-known for her prolific design career within the decorative arts and her associations with the Arts and Crafts movement of the 19th century. An advocate for women’s economic rather than political power, Wheeler paved the way for the female designer, establishing a successful design career for herself and serving as a role model to other women. A Wheeler-designed textile housed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, features an all over honeycomb bee pattern in her signature delicate yet sophisticated aesthetic. A similar textile would appear in Alexander McQueen’s bee-themed SS 2013 collection decades later. With a swarming bee film as its backdrop, the collection showcased beekeeper-style hats and suits constructed of a bee print textile that bears resembles to Wheeler’s 1883 design.
