Apple of My Eye

Rene Magritte and Daniel JacksonBelgian artist René Magritte toyed with perspective and reality, creating surreal works through real, ordinary settings and mundane objects. The apple had a lingering presence within Magritte’s oeuvre, as did the suit-clad man topped with a bowler hat.  In his 1964 work The Son of Man, the painter depicted a commonplace scenario of a suited man, however, placed an apple, somewhat unnervingly, directly in front of the unknown’s visage, obstructing his face. For the Perry Ellis Fall Winter 2013 campaign, photographer Daniel Jackson would look to Magritte with a playful tale on The Son of Man.
